Just outside of Sandakan, Sabah in Borneo, Indonesia there is an Orangutan rehabilitation centre. No, it’s not for criminal apes. The staff there is attempting to teach jungle skills to orangutans that were taken from their parents to be sold illegally as pets. These animals have been caged almost all of their lives and need to be shown how to climb and forage for food. Admittance fees and donations support the centre. Usually the first thing the orangs learn to do is to steal cameras, backpacks and umbrellas from tourists! ‘Just like downtown.’ |
